design dilemma

If you've read my previous posts on Axel Vervoordt and Robert Courtier, you probably know that I'm in love with their moody, romantic interiors.However, while looking at homes in California, where I'll be spending the holidays, I came across an inspiring place, up in the Hollywood Hills, by Belzberg Architects. I think I'm in love again. This presents a dilemma, since I can't imagine blending such different styles, without losing their soul in the process.
It's interesting to consider how the interior style/mood of home ultimately affects one's state of mind, and as a consequence, one's life. Please click on the photos.Two homes, each on opposite ends of the country, would solve the problem. I could easily envision a Vervoordt or Courtier interior, with it's brooding beauty, in New York. While the upbeat, eco friendly, modern castle by Belzberg Architects, is an ideal Californian retreat.

tea dreams

Sorry it's been a few wild weeks away from blogging. Work projects have been pretty consuming, leaving little time for posting.After these hectic days, I'm craving a nice tea break. The perfect spot is a beautiful, authentic Japanese tea house in Manhattan, where I'm heading with friends.The first Urasenke tea house opened in Kyoto in the early 17th century. The New York Urasenke is located in the former studio of Mark Rothko. It's truly like entering another world. Traditional carpenters from Kyoto were flown in to create an authentic teahouse. Even the materials used were brought from Japan. Don't you love those amazing doors?
A geisha before the tea ceremony. At Urasenke, tea is served in a beautiful ceremony, by experts impeccably attired in kimonos, rather than geishas. You'll find geishas at the tea houses in Kyoto's Gion district. When I visited last fall, it was amazing to see a geisha like the one above, rushing along the streets of Gion to the tea houses.Ceremonial, matcha tea is richer than a hot cup of thick French chocolate, slightly bitter, and surprisingly intoxicating; like a champagne buzz. There are a few sessions open to the public, you'll just need to sign up in advance. http://www.urasenkeny.org

dressing for dinner

I've been busy working on a dress which a beautiful, statuesque client selected to wear to the recent Venice Film Festival, followed by dinner at Valentino's home in Venice. She was lovely to work with, and the dress was finished in plenty of time for her to catch her flight to Italy.This green dress reminds me of a more cutting edge, green silk dress I just completed for a wonderful, young opera singer. The dress will be worn at the opening night Met Opera party to celebrate her first lead role. I will try to post photos of us at the party two nights ago. (photo: Keira Knightley, a previous Venice Film Festival guest, in the film, Atonement.). Sorry I've been away for awhile, but I have a good excuse. These days, I'm working madly, trying to finish my collection for a press presentation next week. A brief update; I'm creating a deconstructed, green, silk dress for the young, lead singer to wear on opening night at the Metropolitan Opera. It's in less than 10 days, and I still have to figure out what I'm going to wear.

Love and Paris

A few years ago, a friend gave me a copy of "Love on the Left Bank", a book by Dutch photographer Ed Van der Elsken, who quickly became one of my favorties.

The photos are a fascinating look at the Left Bank of Paris in the early 1950s. The potent images are incredibly modern, and many look like they could have been shot today.

Van der Elsken's subjects are Left Bank street youth, who are, for the most part homeless, unemployed, and living off their beauty and wits. They seem completely content, and fully engaged in their existence.

The beautiful Anne, in the photo above, and the gorgeous Jean Michele, could easily be mistaken for modern day youth. Note the messy hairstyles, unkempt clothing, and even Anne's chandelier earrings; quite a jarring, rebellious look at that time.
